Making sure the COM port is 1-4 (using USB to Serial cable)

If your laptop/tablet does not have a serial port - you'll need to install the USB to Serial cable (and driver). See this page for the USB to Serial driver install directions FIRST. If you have already done that, then follow these directions to change the COM port number to something other than 5 or above!

Step 1- Open the Control Panel in Windows

Go to the START menu in Windows, then SETTINGS .. then CONTROL PANEL. [In XP, the Control Panel might be right on the Start Menu.]

Step 2- Double click on the SYSTEM icon.

Step 3- Go to the HARDWARE tab, and then click the DEVICE MANAGER button. (It will open a new window ... later when we come back to this dialog, click OK to exit.)

Step 4- Under the PORTS, you might find the cable has come in as something like COM5.

Double-click it, or right-click and choose PROPERTIES.

Go to the PORT SETTINGS tab - make sure the BITS PER SECOND = 9600 (if you saw directions on a web page that say any number other than 9600 - that's a mistake ... as of Fall 2007 term!).

Then, click the ADVANCED button

Step 5- Click on COM Port Number - and try to find a number between 1 and 4 that is not being used by the system.

If necessary - use COM1 (even though it will warn you of conflicts)

That's it ... click OK at the bottom of this screen, and then close the various dialogs/windows that we opened.

LOGGER PRO: If you have the interface box connected to the serial port in the back ... and turned on before you start LP..

It will bring up a SCAN box the first time - it should automatically try for COM1, and thus it might just give you a message about being connected {and a REV number for the ULI}. If not, select COM1. It might give an error message the first time ... select COM1 again - it should see it the next time.

DATASTUDIO: As long as you have the COM set to 1-4, DataStudio should be able to find the interface box automatically.
