At some point, you might want to switch your Favorites (your bookmarks) from Internet Explorer over to another machine. Or, you might want to just back them up for safe keeping. If you want to EXPORT favorites, start at step A) .. if you want to IMPORT favorites, skip down to step I).
COPYING FAVORITES (Plan A:
Quick/Easy way)
If you don't care about the "order/layout" of your favorites, the easiest way to move them to a new machine is just copy the Favorites folder (the image to the right shows the location [note: you should obviously look for YOUR username, not mine!] .. if you are using the Administrator account, you may need to copy that one also). Just copy that folder off the old laptop, and then copy the files in it back down to the new laptop Favorites folder. The files will probably come in with alphabetical order (I warned you that this doesn't preserve the order!), but it is by far the easiest way to do it.) [This technique will still retain any sub-folders you might have created in the Favorites.] |
EXPORTING FAVORITES
(Plan B)
A) Start INTERNET EXPLORER |
This Export/Import technique lets you preserve the order of how your favorites are arranged (in case you have taken the time to arrange them) - but it is a slightly longer process. |
B) Go to the FILE menu, then to IMPORT AND EXPORT.
C) This starts the Import/Export wizard - just click NEXT.
D) Select EXPORT FAVORITES.
(Note, you could export cookies also .. there is usually not much reason to do so .. the next time you go to some sites, like Amazon .. it may not remember you, you could always "sign in" again, and it will make a new cookie. I never copy my cookies over to a new machine {one more "cleaning out" step that is kind of nice!}. Also, note the other choice .. Import Favorites - we'll use that at the end. |
|
E) This gives you a choice of which folders to export .. usually you want to export the whole favorites folder, but sometimes you might want to pick just one "branch". (You might see other sub-folders under the main folder if you have created them .. as long as the top folder is "open", it will grab all the sub folders - I just showed a "collapsed" view here, since most people will probably see this).
F) This dialog box askes us for the location of the
export - unless you happen to be switching them over to something like
Netscape ... you probably want to EXPORT TO A FILE - type in the name of
a file, or go navigate to a folder, and then pick a file name (this will
overwrite an existing file - pick carefully!).
This exporting procedure just creates a big giant web page listing all of the links in your favorites folders. You can go point to that file and open in Internet Explorer, and you'll see the "exploded" web-tree of all your links. Make sure you move this file over to the "new" computer if you want to IMPORT it (steps shown below)!! |
|
G) That should be it .. here is one last choice to say "wait, I want to go back and change the location" .. otherwise, click FINISH, and it will export them to the filename you selected.
H) The machine will pause as it does this, then you should get the following "ya-hoo" dialog box. Your Favorites have been stored, either just for backup, or to move to another machine .. if so, copy that file {from step F above} off the first machine and down to the next machine!
IMPORTING FAVORITES
This assumes we have the "exported html file" from the previous steps copied onto the current computer - we are going to point to it and import the favorites. Note : If you already have some new favorites in IE, and import from an old file - you won't get duplicates, unless they are named differently. (So, as a test, if you just want to Export, and then Import again, to get the feel of it .. go ahead! I) Following step B) above, go to File then IMPORT/EXPORT and you should see this dialog box. Select IMPORT FAVORITES and click NEXT. |
|
J) Now, click on the IMPORT FROM A FILE radio-button and navigate to find the file that contains all the favorites.
K) The "new" Favorites folder should already be selected.
L) Now click on FINISH, and it will pull in all the favorites (and put them into subfolders, if they were nested on the old machine). The machine might pause while it does this. |
