Tech Physics 2 Lab - Lab 11 - Thermal Topics

Equipment List for Lab 10

  • 1 temperature probe
  • 1 USBLink (not shown)
  • Assortment of glass beakers
  • Styrofoam Calorimetry cups (2 large cups with aluminum foil layer between them)
  • 1 Small styrofoam cup (for getting ice)
  • 1 Metal bolt
  • 1 test tube clamp
  • 1 beaker tong
  • 1 Hot plate
  • 1 pair of thermao gloves
  • Crushed ice in cooler (not shown)
  • small cube ice in containers in cooler (not shown)

The individual components will be described in the following sections ...

How many ice cubes to use?

It would be better to use no more than two ice cubes (Just like Cindy Lou Who ... no more than two!).

Otherwise they will not melt sufficiently with the amount of water we are using.

Also, you would want either two small cubes, or a small and a large .. but not two large if possible (takes too long to melt).

Hot Plate (yours may look different)

To boil the water needed for the calibration, and for the later cooling curves, we will use the hot plate and one of the large beakers.

Various Calorimetry cups

There are two large double calorimetry cups (two styrofoam cups with a layer of aluminum foil between them).

Measuring Heat Capacity

We use a small aluminum bolt to measure the heat capacity. The "test tube clamp" can be used to move the hot bolt from the boiling water to the calorimetry cup.

Collection of beakers

There should be a collection of various sized beakers to use for the various parts of the labs. Please make sure the beakers are rinsed out and dried at the end of the experiment.

Water/Ice/Dump buckets

There are some buckets over on the side of the lab room. They will contain either the water for the lab, any ice that might be necessary, and if they are on the floor, they can be used as "dump" buckets, to dump out the leftovers.

There is a larger water "tanks" (like in Chemistry) for the clean water.
