Tech Physics 2 Lab - Lab 4 Electric Fields and Potentials

General Setup

The equipment needed for this lab :

  • 1 electric equipotential mapping board with conductive paper
  • 1 5-volt Power supply (not shown)
  • 1 multi meter
  • assorted black and red leads
  • 2 green probes
  • 1 plexiglas piece with holes

Green tip for better measurements

We can get more accurate measurements on the board using the green plugs connected to the end of the red wire.

"Touch down" - don't scrape!

The surface of the conducting sheet can be damaged if you "drag" the probe around the surface .. just touch down to get a reading - don't slide it.

Also make sure the green probe is perpendicular to the conductive paper.

Finding the maximum voltage (thus E field direction)

In the part where you are looking for the maximum voltage at a particular point ... you disconnect the black probe lead from the low end of the board (still leaving that end connected to the power supply, naturally), and use the plexiglas sheet - two adjacent holes are 1 cm apart.
